i. The Signal

The look of renewal, at a pace your skin can take.

Your skin looks a little less smooth and firm than it used to, and the evening routine keeps stalling. Strong actives tend to arrive with redness and stinging, so you stop using them, which is a reasonable thing to do. What stays is the wish for something rich enough to rest in overnight and calm enough to keep using.

Defy Face Butter was made for exactly that. A nightly butter built on bakuchiol at 2%, rich enough to be the last thing you do at the end of a day.

ii. The Ritual

A grounded, comforting ritual.

A waterless night butter built on bakuchiol at 2%, with shea and kokum butters and antioxidant-rich rosehip and goji berry seed oils. Used nightly, it leaves skin looking smoother and feeling softer. No heat, no tingle.

The texture is a balm that melts on contact and sinks in to a cushioned finish that stays comfortable. A small amount pressed in at night is the whole ritual, and the 1.5 oz jar holds about 300 of them.

Made for skin that

looks less smooth or firm than it used to
wants the look of renewal on gentle terms
does not tolerate retinol or strong night creams
loves a rich, grounding nightly ritual

iii. The Standard

What is in it, and what is left out.

Defy Face Butter is a waterless blend of plant butters and seed oils, with bakuchiol at 2%. It is formulated to the tolerance of the most reactive skin, and every ingredient in it is there for a reason we can name.

99% natural · EWG 2A high-natural formula with a clean EWG rating.
Bakuchiol at 2%A gentle plant botanical, used at a stated percentage for the look of smooth, firm skin.
Fragrance-free & EO-freeNo synthetic fragrance and no essential oils. This one is anhydrous, so it carries no benzyl alcohol either.
Waterless · plastic-freeAn anhydrous butter, so no preservative is needed, in plastic-free refillable packaging.

The 1.5 oz jar holds about 300 applications, which works out to roughly $0.57 a night. The 1 oz holds about 200, at close to the same cost per use. Waterless and concentrated, so most jars last months.

Sensory Notes

In the jar it is firm, more balm than cream, and it takes a fingernail to lift a little out. It melts the second it meets warm fingertips, which is how you know you have taken enough. Pressed onto the face it feels rich and cushioning, and it stays that way for a minute or two while it settles. It sinks in rather than sitting on top. By the time you are in bed it has gone soft and comfortable, with a faint sheen and no slick.

In the jarFirm and dense. A balm rather than a cream.
On the fingertipsMelts at body heat in a few seconds. A pea-sized amount is plenty.
Pressing it inRich and cushioning. Press rather than rub, and it goes further.
A minute laterSettled into a soft finish with a faint sheen. Not greasy, not tacky.
In the morningSkin feels supple and looks rested. Nothing to wash off.

Scent: nothing was added, and it does have a smell. Faintly nutty and a little green, which is the cacay and the seed oils being themselves. You catch it while you are pressing it in, and it is gone within a minute or two. It will not linger on your pillow. No synthetic fragrance and no essential oils.

How to Use

Last step at night

Use as the final step of your evening ritual, after your serum or oil.

Warm a small amount

Take a small amount on clean fingertips and warm it briefly so the butter melts.

Press it in

Press gently over the face and neck, letting the butter sink in as you breathe.

Let it rest

Leave it on overnight as your comforting final layer. A little is all you need.

Where it sits in your routine

This is the last step. Cleanse with the Hydrate or Brighten Cleansing Bar, and once or twice a week follow that with the Cacao Renewal Polish or the Radiance Mask. Then this, pressed in last, over anything else you already use.

The middle step is optional. On a hard week, cleanse and finish, and leave the rest.

Care & Keeping

How long a jar lasts

The 1.5 oz jar holds roughly 300 nightly applications and the 1 oz holds about 200, so most people are into months rather than weeks. Because it is waterless, nothing in the jar is filler, and a pea-sized amount really is the dose.

Whether it is preserved

It is not, and it does not need to be. There is no water phase, so there is nothing for anything to grow in. That is why you will find no preservative anywhere in the ingredient list.

Dry fingertips every time, and it will keep exactly as it is. Water carried into a waterless jar is the only thing that would change that.

Storing it

Cool, out of direct sun, lid on. A steamy bathroom shelf will soften it, which affects how it scoops and nothing else. The butter is a soft apricot colour rather than white, which is the astaxanthin. There is so little of it in the formula that it does not tint skin and it will not mark a pillowcase.

If it arrives soft in hot weather

It is fine. With no water in it, a soft jar is a warm jar and nothing has spoiled. Stand the closed jar somewhere cool for an hour, or in the fridge for twenty minutes, and it will firm up again.

It sets back smooth rather than grainy. The shea here is East African Nilotica, a softer, higher-oleic grade, which is why a warm journey does not change how it feels and why this sits light rather than heavy on skin that finds rich butters hard going. If a jar arrives genuinely damaged, tell us and we will replace it.

Please Note

Contains white lupine, a legume that can cross-react with peanut, and both shea and cacay, which are tree-nut derived. If any of those apply to you, read the transparency section below before you order.

Formulated for reactive, easily-overwhelmed skin. We suggest a patch test on the inner forearm, left 24 hours, before facial use.

For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, and rinse if it gets in.

Ingredient Transparency

The look of renewal, with every ingredient named.

I formulate for skin that reacts to almost everything, including my own. So I build with less, and I name all of it. Defy uses bakuchiol at 2% for the look of smoother, firmer skin, in a rich nightly butter with nothing sharp in it, and it is genuinely fragrance-free and essential oil free. If you are navigating an autoimmune condition, MCAS, eczema, psoriasis, or skin that does not tolerate retinol, here is the full picture, including a couple of notes that matter.

Genuinely fragrance-free

This is one of the products I can call fragrance-free without a caveat. There is no synthetic fragrance and no essential oils, and as an anhydrous butter it carries none of the benzyl alcohol that keeps the water-based products from making the claim. The soft, earthy note is simply the shea and seed oils themselves.

Why it is made for reactive skin

Bakuchiol at 2%A gentle plant botanical at a stated percentage, with no harsh actives alongside it.
Genuinely fragrance-freeNo synthetic fragrance, no essential oils, no benzyl alcohol. The claim holds without a caveat.
No preservatives neededAn anhydrous butter, so it needs no preservative system at all.

Every ingredient, named

Here is everything in the jar, a rich waterless blend of butters and oils with bakuchiol at 2%. A few things to name clearly: the lupine is a legume that can cross-react with peanut, and both the shea and cacay are tree-nut derived. The notes below also cover sunflower (the ragweed family) and goji (a nightshade), so you can decide with the full facts in hand.

Open the full ingredient list
LupineLupinus Albus Seed Extract
A gentle, plant-derived botanical, and the ingredient here worth flagging most clearly. Lupine is a legume (Fabaceae) that can cross-react with peanut, so this is the note for anyone with a peanut or legume allergy.

Butters & Nut OilsShea (Nilotica), Kokum, Cacay
The rich, melting base. Both shea and cacay are tree-nut derived, so this is the note for anyone with a tree-nut allergy. Shea in particular is highly refined and tolerated by many people who react to nuts. Kokum is a food-derived seed butter.

Antioxidant OilsGoji, Rosehip, Pomegranate, Sunflower, Astaxanthin
Nutrient-rich oils and a vivid algae antioxidant. Goji is a nightshade (Solanaceae), worth knowing if you avoid nightshades. Sunflower is in the daisy and ragweed (Asteraceae) family, and rosehip is in the rose (Rosaceae) family. The astaxanthin is algae-sourced rather than shellfish-derived, which matters for shellfish allergies.

Botanicals & SupportingBakuchiol, Gotu Kola, Green Tea, Squalane, Castor, Hyaluronate, Vitamin E
Bakuchiol is a purified compound rather than a legume. Gotu kola sits in the carrot and celery (Apiaceae) family, and squalane and hyaluronate are skin-familiar. Light sourcing notes: the caprylic/capric triglycerides are usually coconut-derived, and the Vitamin E (tocopherol) is sunflower-derived, the same sunflower and ragweed family as the sunflower oil above. Castor is a very occasional contact sensitizer.

That is everything, with nothing hidden. If a particular ingredient gives you pause, the lupine if you have a peanut or legume allergy, or the shea and cacay if you react to tree nuts, patch test a small area first. You know your body best. Indiefog makes skincare, and it sits alongside your doctors, never instead of them.

Defy Face Butter is a cosmetic. It is made to soften and comfort skin, and it does not treat, cure, or prevent any condition.
