Defy Face Butter

The look of smooth, firm skin, at a pace your skin can take.

Your skin looks a little less smooth and firm than it used to, and the evening routine keeps stalling. If you have tried something strong for it, you may have stopped when the redness and stinging arrived, which is a reasonable thing to do.

What stays is the wish for something rich enough to rest in overnight and calm enough to keep using. Defy Face Butter was made for exactly that. A nightly butter built on purified bakuchiol at 2%, over a base of Nilotica shea and kokum.

The hero · purified bakuchiol at 2%

Bakuchiol is a purified plant compound, and at 2% it is the reason this butter exists.

It is not babchi seed oil. Babchi carries psoralens and furocoumarins, which are phototoxic, and it has no place in a product you leave on overnight. What is here is the isolated molecule, confirmed pure on the formula sheet. The same bakuchiol is in the Firm Elixir at 2% and the Brighten Elixir at 1%.

This is also the highest allergen-flag product in the line, for three reasons named plainly on the label. The allergens note below sets out all three before you order.

Left out on purpose

Babchi seed oil, left out on purpose, because of what it carries. No water, and no preservative, because there is nothing here for anything to grow in. No synthetic fragrance and no essential oils.

  • The baseNilotica shea and kokum butter are four fifths of the jar, split three to one. Nilotica is a softer grade of shea with a lower melt point, which is why a rich butter still feels light on skin that finds rich butters hard going. Formulated to support your skin’s moisture barrier.
  • The heroPurified bakuchiol at 2%, for the look of smooth, firm skin, with no harsh actives alongside it.
  • Rosehip and pomegranate, twice eachBoth are here as cold-pressed seed oil and again as a CO₂ extract. Goji seed oil and cacay sit alongside them, and cacay is naturally rich in linoleic acid.
  • What keeps it freshVitamin E, rosemary extract, and an astaxanthin complex. This jar carries a heavy load of delicate oils, so the antioxidants are doing real work rather than decorating the label.
  • Made for skin thatLooks less smooth or firm than it used to. Wants the look of smoother, firmer skin on gentle terms. Does not tolerate retinol or strong night creams. Likes a rich, grounding nightly ritual.
  • ScentNothing is added for scent, and it does have a smell. Faintly nutty and a little green, which is the shea and the cacay being themselves. You catch it while you are pressing it in, and it is gone within a minute. It will not linger on your pillow.
  • Where it sits in your routineThis is the last step. Cleanse, and once or twice a week follow that with the Cacao Renewal Polish or the Radiance Mask. Then this, pressed in last, over anything else you already use. The middle step is optional. On a hard week, cleanse and finish, and leave the rest.

Because we prioritize freshness and small-batch production, the list above may occasionally vary from your packaging. The ingredient list printed on your jar always reflects the exact formula inside.

Free from

Babchi seed oil · Water · Preservatives · Synthetic fragrance · Essential oils · Benzyl alcohol · Retinol · Parabens, dyes, talc

Truly fragrance-free, with no caveat. As a waterless butter it carries none of the benzyl alcohol found in our water-based products. The soft, nutty note is the shea and the seed oils themselves. This list is longer than most of ours on purpose: several of those lines are carrier oils that arrive inside an extract, and we name them rather than let them travel unlisted.

What you notice

  • In the jarFirm and dense, a soft apricot colour rather than white. A balm rather than a cream.
  • On the fingertipsMelts at body heat in a few seconds. The melt is how you know you have taken enough.
  • Pressing it inRich and cushioning, and it sinks in without dragging.
  • A minute laterSettled into a soft finish with a faint sheen. Not greasy, not tacky.
  • The colourIt does not tint skin and it will not mark a pillowcase. There is only five hundredths of a percent of astaxanthin in here, which is enough to colour the butter in the jar and nothing more.
  • In the morningSkin feels supple and looks rested. Nothing to wash off.

How to use it

1

Last step at night

Use as the final step of your evening ritual, after your serum or oil.

2

Take a small amount

A pea-sized amount on clean, dry fingertips. It is firmer than a cream, so it takes a moment to lift out, and that is the jar doing its job.

3

Warm it until it melts

Hold it between your fingertips for a few seconds. When it turns to oil, you have taken enough.

4

Press it in

Press gently over the face and neck, letting the butter sink in as you breathe. Press rather than rub, and it goes further.

5

Leave it on

It stays on overnight as your final layer. Nothing to wash off in the morning.

Allergens and sensitivityEvery ingredient named, and who each one matters to

I formulate for skin that reacts to almost everything, including my own. So I build for less, and I name all of it. Here is everything in the jar, written for anyone with a specific allergy.

White Lupine, Shea & CacayLupinus Albus, Butyrospermum Parkii, Caryodendron Orinocense · read this one first
This is the highest allergen-flag product in the line, and all three reasons are named on the label rather than hidden in a blend. Lupine is a legume (Fabaceae) that cross-reacts with peanut. Shea and cacay are both tree-nut derived. This is a leave-on product rather than something you rinse off, so if peanut, legume, or tree-nut allergy is part of your picture, check with your provider first and patch test before you use it. That is a decision to make alongside your doctors, never instead of them.
BakuchiolPurified compound · 2% · hero
A purified plant compound, confirmed pure on the formula sheet, and not babchi seed oil. The whole babchi material is absent from a product you leave on overnight, and the reason is in the hero section above.
Goji Berry Seed OilLycium Barbarum · nightshade
Goji is a nightshade (Solanaceae), worth knowing if you avoid nightshades.
Rosehip & PomegranateRosa Rubiginosa, Rosa Canina, Punica Granatum
Each is here twice, as a cold-pressed seed oil and again as a CO₂ extract. Rosehip sits in the rose (Rosaceae) family, and the pomegranate is food-derived.
Sunflower, Rosemary & Vitamin EHelianthus Annuus, Rosmarinus Officinalis, Tocopherol
Sunflower arrives as the carrier in four different ingredients, which is why it sits fairly high on the label. It is in the daisy and ragweed (Asteraceae) family, and the vitamin E is sunflower-derived as well, never soy. Rosemary is here as the leaf extract, which is what keeps the essential-oil-free standard intact, and it sits in the mint (Lamiaceae) family.
The Astaxanthin ComplexHaematococcus Pluvialis (Astaxanthin) Extract
This is one ingredient, an algae oleoresin at five hundredths of a percent. It is algae-sourced rather than shellfish-derived, which matters for shellfish allergies, and it is what gives the butter its warm colour.
Gotu Kola, Green Tea & the carriersCentella, Camellia Sinensis, squalane, castor, hyaluronate
Gotu kola sits in the carrot and celery (Apiaceae) family. Squalane is olive-derived and skin-familiar. Castor appears twice, as the oil and as its hydrogenated wax, both carrying the hyaluronate, and castor is a very occasional contact sensitizer.

That is everything in the jar. Nothing hidden, nothing implied. If a particular ingredient gives you pause, the lupine if you have a peanut or legume allergy, or the shea and cacay if you react to tree nuts, patch test a small area first. You know your body best.

Care and keepingHow long a jar lasts, whether it is preserved, and keeping it clean

How long a jar lasts

The 1.5 oz jar holds roughly 300 nightly applications and the 1 oz holds about 200, so most people are into months rather than weeks. Because it is waterless, nothing in the jar is filler, and a pea-sized amount really is the dose.

Whether it is preserved

It is not, and it does not need to be. There is no water phase, so there is nothing for anything to grow in. That is why you will find no preservative anywhere in the ingredient list.

Dry fingertips every time, and it will keep exactly as it is. Water carried into a waterless jar is the only thing that would change that.

Storing it

Cool, out of direct sun, lid on. Below room temperature is ideal, and a steamy bathroom shelf will soften it, which affects how it scoops and nothing else.

If it arrives soft in hot weather

It is fine. With no water in it, a soft jar is a warm jar and nothing has spoiled. Stand the closed jar somewhere cool for an hour, or in the fridge for twenty minutes, and it will firm up again.

It sets back smooth rather than grainy, which is the Nilotica grade doing its work. If a jar arrives genuinely damaged, tell us and we will replace it.

Please note

Formulated for reactive, easily-overwhelmed skin. We suggest a patch test on the inner forearm, left 24 hours, before facial use.

Contains white lupine, a legume that can cross-react with peanut, and both shea and cacay, which are tree-nut derived. This is a leave-on product. If any of those apply to you, read the allergens section before you order.

For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, and rinse with water if it gets in.
