Frequently Asked Questions

The questions careful
skin asks first.

How our products are formulated, preserved, sourced, and made — answered honestly, in one calm place.

Products & Use

How long does one jar last?

Because our formulas are nutrient-dense and filler-free, you only need a very small amount per use. Many customers find one jar lasts 6–12 months depending on frequency and individual use — so a little tends to go a long way.

Do your products have a shelf life?

Yes. Because we use mostly raw, unrefined ingredients, we recommend using products within 12 months of purchase. We keep minimal stock and often make on demand, so you receive a fresh product. Powdered products keep longer — up to 24 months.

How are your products made?

We are a small-batch, women-owned, handmade line. Every product is made by hand in our small shop in San Diego, CA — no outsourcing, no mass production.

Where are your products made?

San Diego, California, USA. Our products are made and packaged in a facility that also handles tree nuts, peanuts, and soy; it is milk-, egg-, shellfish-, and wheat-free. If you have allergies, please check the listed allergens on each product page.

Ingredients & Sourcing

Where are your ingredients sourced?

We source almost all of our ingredients from local or USA suppliers. A few of them:

  • Local San Diego & US family farms — organic, locally grown hops, CBD wax, and Arizona-grown jojoba oil.
  • Bulk Naturals — 100% pure and undiluted, from their permaculture farm in the Ozarks and a local homesteading community.
  • Wholesale Botanics — responsibly sourced, cruelty-free, made in the USA.
  • Nature In Bottle — rigorously vetted suppliers and quality testing, with no synthetics, contaminants, or cheap fillers, and a transparent, ethical supply chain.
  • Jedwards International — a wholesale supplier of natural ingredients, including difficult-to-source and custom-manufactured materials.
Which ingredients are raw or unrefined?

We believe raw, unrefined ingredients are a thoughtful choice for skin. Most of our butters and 99% of our carrier oils are raw and unrefined — these ingredients are naturally rich in vitamins A and E and fatty acids. It is also what gives our products their unique natural scents.

Do you source sustainable ingredients?

Where we can, yes. We choose suppliers with specific practices we value — permaculture farming, organic growing, and responsible harvesting — because supporting those businesses helps them grow and supplies you with high-quality ingredients. It is a loop we are proud to be part of.

Do you use preservatives?

Yes — properly, and transparently. A water-containing product without a preservative is a contamination risk, and for sensitive or immunocompromised bodies that risk is unacceptable. We use two certified preservation systems depending on the formula:

  • One fully natural system — used where natural preservation is sufficient and stable.
  • One COSMOS & Ecocert certified systembenzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid, two preservatives permitted under organic ECOCERT standards, used where safety calls for higher performance.

We name benzyl alcohol openly. It is a preservative, not a fragrance — but because it can appear as a declarable fragrance allergen on EU labels, the products that contain it (our magnesium butters and Gentle Balm) carry “no added fragrance” rather than a “fragrance-free” claim.

Every water-based formula is properly preserved. Most of our anhydrous (oil, butter, and powdered) products contain no water and need no preservation; a few of our butters carry the Ecocert system as an added safeguard. We will always choose what is genuinely safe over what is merely marketable as natural.

Why are so many of your products water-free?

We make most of our products without added water to use less water and extend shelf life. Because our oil-based and bar products contain no added water, they are more concentrated, lighter to ship, travel-friendly, and inherently stable without preservation.

Safety & Sensitivities

Are your products fragrance-free and essential oil-free?

We never use synthetic fragrance in anything we make — fragrance is one of the most common triggers for reactive and mast-cell-sensitive skin.

Our entire facial line is completely essential oil-free. Some of our body butters are scented — but only ever with botanical essential oils, never synthetic fragrance:

  • Our lightly scented butters (Gentle Descent, Grounded Descent) each have a completely essential-oil-free twin — Pure Descent and Pure Reset — made for the body that reacts to even gentle botanicals.
  • Our two menthol butters (Deep Clarity, Cooling Clarity) are built around essential oils as the active itself. These do not have an unscented version, and we say so plainly on the page.

Any faint natural scent in our unscented products comes from the raw, unrefined butters and oils themselves — not from added fragrance.

Why aren’t some products labeled “fragrance-free”?

A few of our formulas — our magnesium butters and Gentle Balm — are preserved with benzyl alcohol, one of the few preservatives permitted under organic ECOCERT standards. It is a preservative, not a fragrance.

But because benzyl alcohol can appear as a declarable fragrance allergen on EU labels, we won’t call those products “fragrance-free.” We’d rather name the ingredient than let a label speak for us. They remain free of any added synthetic fragrance, and we tell you exactly what is in each one.

Are your products cruelty-free and vegan?

Yes. We never test on animals (only on willing friends and family), and all of our ingredients are vegan.

I have allergies or sensitive skin — what should I know?

We craft our products with natural oils, butters, herbs, clays, and botanicals, including natural nuts, seeds, and fruit. If you have allergies, please read the product label and the ingredients section before use.

If you are uncertain about a sensitivity, we recommend a patch test first; if irritation occurs, discontinue use. If you are pregnant, nursing, using a product on a child under 12, or managing a medical condition, please consult your physician before use.

Packaging

Where is your packaging sourced?

From UCanPack, EcoEnclose, Elevate Packaging, and Container & Packaging — companies we chose for specific practices like recycled content, recyclable materials, and home-compostable options.

Is your packaging compostable?

Much of it is. Our shipping supplies, boxes, filler, labels, tape, pouches, sample packs, and refills are designed to be home-compostable, meaning they can break down in a typical home compost setup.

Our clear stand-up refill pouches are home-compostable too, so we do not recommend them for long-term storage — pour the contents into an airtight jar and compost the pouch.

How do I dispose of your packaging?
  • Shipping boxes — recycle or compost
  • Packing filler — home compost
  • Shipping label & tissue paper — home compost
  • Refill pouches — home or commercial compost (or trash if you have neither)
  • Sample packs & bag labels — home compost
  • Jars — refill and reuse; otherwise, please recycle
