Brighten Elixir

When your skin has lost its light, and you want it back gently.

Skin looks flat and a little tired, missing the lit-from-within quality you remember. Strong brightening actives are the usual route back, and for reactive skin they tend to end in redness and stinging.

Brighten Elixir takes a slower road. Nineteen oils and extracts, mostly cold-pressed and CO₂-extracted, and nothing else in the bottle. No acids, no exfoliants, and nothing added for scent.

The hero · purified bakuchiol at 1%

Bakuchiol is a purified plant compound, and it is what does the gentle renewal work here.

It is not babchi seed oil. Babchi seed oil carries psoralens and furocoumarins, which are phototoxic, so it can burn in sunlight and darken skin. That is the opposite of what this bottle is for, and it was taken out on purpose. What replaced it is the isolated molecule at 1%, with none of that in it. The same bakuchiol is in the Brighten Eye Elixir, and the Firm Elixir runs it at 2%.

Babchi seed oil, left out on purpose, because it carries phototoxic psoralens. No acids and no exfoliants. No water, and no preservative, because there is nothing here for anything to grow in. No synthetic fragrance and no essential oils.

The baseOlive squalane and jojoba make up nearly half the bottle, with prickly pear, tamanu, and hibiscus under them. Stable oils, chosen so the delicate ones sitting on top have something steady to sit in.
The antioxidant berriesMaqui and elderberry, with sea buckthorn in both its pressed oil and its CO₂ extract. These are the oils that give the blend its colour and most of its character.
The heroPurified bakuchiol at 1%, for gentle renewal, with gotu kola and green tea alongside it.
What keeps it freshVitamin E and rosemary leaf extract, added last so they stay active. They are antioxidants, not preservatives, and there is a real difference between the two.
Made for skin thatLooks dull or flat. Wants a more radiant look on gentle terms. Reacts to strong vitamin C, acids, and exfoliants. Likes an antioxidant-rich oil for that lit-from-within look.
ScentNothing is added for scent. What you notice is the berry and seed oils themselves, soft and faintly sweet. No synthetic fragrance and no essential oils.
Where it sits in your routineStep four. Cleanse, then an essence, then a serum, then this pressed in. It can be the last step on its own, or it can go under the Ceramide Barrier Cream or the Defy Face Butter. Once or twice a week the Cacao Renewal Polish or the Radiance Mask goes in after cleansing, and the routine works without it.

Truly fragrance-free, with no caveat. As a waterless oil it carries none of the benzyl alcohol found in our water-based butters. The soft, sweet note is the berry and seed oils themselves.

What you notice

In the bottleDeeply pigmented, somewhere between amber and orange. That colour is the carrot root, the sea buckthorn, and the berry oils, and it is what a bottle this rich in carotenoids looks like.
Initial feelLight and silky. Fluid on the fingertips, and thinner than the colour suggests.
AbsorptionSinks in fast, leaving no film behind.
On the skinThe tint fades as it absorbs. On very fair skin it can sit for a moment first, so give it that moment before you dress or touch a pale pillowcase.
LayeringA butter or cream goes straight over the top.
FinishDewy and even. Skin looks lit from within, morning or night.

How to use it

Warm it between your palms

Press a few drops between your palms and let the oil warm before it meets your skin. Cold oil on tired skin is a small shock, and this step removes it.

Place your hands first

Rest your palms over your face for a breath or two before you move. It is a small thing, and it is the part that lets your shoulders drop.

Press it in, slowly

Press gently over the face and neck, moving upward. No rubbing and no pulling. Let the oil sink in on its own.

Pause before you seal

Let it settle for a moment before you reach for anything else. Then follow with a butter or cream if you are using one.

Keep it external

External use only. Keep away from the eyes, and rinse with water if it gets in.

BakuchiolPurified compound · 1% · hero · read this one first

A purified plant compound at 1%, and the reason this formula changed. The previous version used babchi seed oil, which carries phototoxic psoralens and furocoumarins. Those can burn in sunlight and darken skin, which is the opposite of what this bottle is for, so the whole material came out. What is here now is the isolated molecule with none of that in it. If you have been using this for a while, read the list again before you reorder.

Tamanu Seed OilCalophyllum Inophyllum · nut-derived

Tamanu is pressed from a nut kernel, so this is the note for anyone with a tree-nut allergy. It is 8% of the bottle, which is enough to matter, and it is named on the label rather than hidden inside a blend.

Berry & Seed OilsRosehip, elderberry, maqui, sea buckthorn, prickly pear, jojoba, hibiscus

The antioxidant heart of the oil. Rosehip is in the rose (Rosaceae) family. The berries, elderberry and maqui and sea buckthorn and prickly pear, are food-derived, and they are named here for those specific allergies. Reactions to the pressed oils are uncommon.

Carrot & Gotu KolaDaucus Carota, Centella Asiatica

Both sit in the carrot and celery (Apiaceae) family, so that is the note for that allergy. Gotu kola is classed in Apiaceae or Araliaceae depending on the source.

Green Caviar & Green TeaCaulerpa Lentillifera, Camellia Sinensis

Green caviar is an algae, a light note for anyone who knows they react to algae-derived ingredients. Green tea is here as an antioxidant botanical.

Rosemary Leaf ExtractRosmarinus Officinalis

A natural antioxidant that helps the oils stay fresh. This is the leaf extract, which is what keeps the essential-oil-free standard intact here. Rosemary sits in the mint (Lamiaceae) family, so this is the note for anyone with a mint-family sensitivity.

Squalane, Vitamin E & SunflowerSqualane (olive), Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus

Plant squalane is olive-derived and very skin-familiar. The vitamin E is sunflower-derived, and never soy, and a small amount of sunflower seed oil arrives with the rosemary extract, so both sit in the sunflower and ragweed (Asteraceae) family. Named here for anyone with that allergy.

The colour, and your pillowcaseCarrot root, sea buckthorn, berry oils

This is a deeply pigmented oil. It absorbs and the tint goes with it, and on very fair skin or light fabric it can leave a trace for a moment first. Give it that moment. Nothing has gone wrong, and no dye was added to make it that colour.

That is everything in the bottle. Nothing hidden, nothing implied. If a particular ingredient gives you pause, the tamanu if you have a tree-nut allergy, or the sunflower if you are ragweed-sensitive, patch test a small area first. You know your body best.

Care and keepingHow long a bottle lasts, why it is preserved, and keeping it clean

How long a bottle lasts

A few drops covers a face, and the dropper makes it easy to take less than you think you need.

We have not printed a month figure, because ours would not be yours.

Whether it is preserved, and why not

No, and it does not need one. There is no water in here. A preservative exists to stop things growing in water, and with no water there is nothing to grow in. That is one more thing left out on purpose.

What is in here instead is vitamin E and rosemary extract. Those are antioxidants. They slow the oils turning over time, which is a different job from preserving.

Storing it, and why the bottle is amber

Cool, out of direct sunlight, cap closed. This blend is built on oils that turn faster than most, rosehip and elderberry and maqui among them, so the amber glass and the small headspace in the bottle are both doing real work. A sunny windowsill and the shelf above a hot shower are the two places to avoid. A drawer or a cupboard is ideal.

If it arrives warm, and when to stop

Warmth in transit is nothing to worry about here. There is no water and no emulsion, so there is nothing to melt and nothing to split. Leave it somewhere cool and it will be exactly as it should be.

What to watch for over a long time is the smell. Plant oils turn eventually, and when they do the scent goes sharp or flat rather than soft. If yours smells different from the bottle you opened, stop using it on your face and tell us, and we will replace it.
