What helps at that point is everything you do not need, taken out. Pure Descent is the simplest thing I make. An unscented magnesium body butter, with magnesium, raw butters, and nothing else added.

The magnesiumMagnesium chloride, at about 200 mg of magnesium per teaspoon, dissolved in water rather than added as a powder. It is what gives the butter its smooth, grounding feel.
The baseRaw shea, coconut and mango. Shea is the largest thing in the jar. The texture is rich and melting.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter36% · the largest ingredient

Raw and unrefined. Tree-derived, and clinically low-allergen even for tree-nut-reactive skin. Named here for anyone with that specific allergy.

Magnesium Chloride≈ 200 mg magnesium per tsp

Dissolved in water rather than added as a powder. Very low-allergen. Some people notice a light tingle on first use, particularly on freshly shaved or broken skin.

AquaThe solvent the magnesium goes in

Water is what makes a preservative necessary, and it is why a jar that arrives separated should not be used.

Coconut & Mango ButtersRaw & unrefined, organic

Mango is in the Anacardiaceae family, alongside cashew and pistachio, named here for anyone with that allergy.

Cetearyl Olivate & Sorbitan OlivateOlive-derived emulsifier

The olive-based system that holds the butter together so it spreads evenly. Plant-derived and low-reactivity.

Benzyl AlcoholECOCERT-permitted preservative

Keeps the formula stable. It is here as a preservative rather than a scent ingredient, and it is also a declarable fragrance allergen on EU labels. That is the one reason this butter is called unscented rather than fragrance-free.

Supporting baseCandelilla wax, dehydroacetic acid, vitamin E

Texture, structure and freshness, all low-reactivity. Our vitamin E is sunflower-derived, a light sunflower and ragweed (Asteraceae) note for anyone watching that family.

That is everything in the jar. Nothing hidden, nothing implied. If a particular ingredient gives you pause, patch test a small area first. You know your body best.

How long a jar lasts

A thumbnail-sized scoop covers the back of the neck and both shoulders, so a jar used nightly lasts a long time. Most people take less after the first fortnight.

Whether it is preserved, and why

Magnesium chloride goes in dissolved rather than as a powder, so there is water in the jar, and water is what makes a preservative necessary. The system is dehydroacetic acid and benzyl alcohol, both ECOCERT-permitted.

Storing it

Cool, out of direct sun, lid on. Scoop with dry fingers or a small spatula rather than wet hands, and keep the jar off the edge of the bath.

If it arrives separated

Softening in a hot mailbox is normal and it will firm up again. A wet or watery layer sitting apart from the butter is not. Do not use it. Send us a photograph and we will replace it.
