i. The Signal

When everything feels like too much.

Skin that is reacting right now. Stinging at things it used to tolerate, tight and hot, done with being experimented on. On days like this a longer routine is one more thing to get through.

The Bare Ritual is the smallest routine I make. Three steps, morning and night, and no decisions inside it.

ii. The Ritual

Three steps. That is the whole thing.

A waterless cleansing powder, a hydrating essence, and the Ceramide Barrier Cream. Cleanse, press hydration into damp skin, then seal it in. Nothing between those steps and nothing after them.

The cleanse is the Cloud Cleansing Powder. Eight ingredients and no water, so it needs no preservative at all. It turns to a soft cream in wet hands and rinses clean.

The subtraction is the point. No serum, no oil, no treatment step, no exfoliating acids, no retinoids. Fewer ingredients on your skin means fewer things to sort through if something does react.

What is in it, and what is left out.

Three products, formulated without essential oils, synthetic fragrance, synthetic dyes, or talc. No exfoliating acids, no retinoids, no CBD, no lupine anywhere in the set. The Ceramide Barrier Cream is built around ceramides, cholesterol, and phytosphingosine, the same lipid family skin makes for itself.

A cleanse with no preservativeThe powder has no water in it, so there is nothing for a preservative to do. It is left out on purpose.

The Cloud Cleansing Powder contains colloidal oat. If you have an oat allergy, or you have become sensitized to oat, this is the one step in the set to skip. Oat protein can act as a sensitizer on skin that is already reacting, and it is worth taking seriously. Write to us if you would like a version of this ritual without the oat step. On gluten, which is a separate question: the oat is certified gluten-free at source, and we hold the supplier certification on file.

How to Use

Morning and night, in this order. If mornings are too much, water alone is fine and you can start at step two.

1 · Cleanse

Tip a small scoop of the Cloud Cleansing Powder into wet palms and work it into a soft cream. Massage gently over damp skin and rinse. Leave your skin damp for the next step.

2 · Essence

Press the Clarity Essence into damp skin. Press it in gently, and let it sink in before moving on.

3 · Cream

Press in the Ceramide Barrier Cream to finish. A little is enough.

Keep water out of the powder jar. Dry hands and a dry scoop keep it exactly as it should be. If you are reintroducing products after a long break, start with one step for a week before adding the next. Patch test a small area on your inner forearm before your first full use.

Scent: no synthetic fragrance and no essential oils in any of the three. The Cloud Cleansing Powder and the Clarity Essence carry no benzyl alcohol, so both are truly fragrance-free, and the powder carries no preservative at all. The Ceramide Barrier Cream is preserved with a system that includes benzyl alcohol, a gentle ECOCERT preservative that also counts as a declarable fragrance allergen, so that one piece is labeled unscented. It is the only piece in the set where that distinction applies.

Read this before you order

The Cloud Cleansing Powder contains colloidal oat. If you have an oat allergy, or you have become sensitized to oat, this is one to skip. Oat protein can act as a sensitizer on skin that is already reacting, and that risk is worth taking seriously. Write to us if you would like a version of this ritual without the oat step.

On gluten: the colloidal oat is certified gluten-free at source, and we hold the supplier certification on file. This is a separate question from the sensitization note above, which is about oat protein rather than gluten.

Tapioca note: the powder contains tapioca starch, which comes from cassava. Some people with latex-fruit allergy track cassava, so it is named here.

Tree-derived note: the cream contains shea. The powder’s two cleansing agents are commonly coconut- or palm-derived, which is worth knowing if you track coconut.

Mushroom and ferment note: snow mushroom is in all three products. The Ceramide Barrier Cream additionally contains yeast amino acids and a Lactobacillus ferment. If you are sensitive to yeast, mould, or ferments, read those product pages before you order.

On fragrance and preservatives

All three are free of essential oils and synthetic fragrance. The Cloud Cleansing Powder and the Clarity Essence carry no benzyl alcohol, so both are truly fragrance-free. The powder goes further and carries no preservative of any kind, because it has no water in it. The essence is preserved with gluconolactone and sodium benzoate. The Ceramide Barrier Cream is preserved with a system that includes benzyl alcohol, a gentle ECOCERT preservative that also counts as a declarable fragrance allergen, so that one piece is labeled unscented. If benzyl alcohol is something you avoid, the powder and the essence are the two pieces that leave it out.

Cloud Cleansing Powder step one

Eight ingredients, waterless, and unpreserved. Contains certified gluten-free colloidal oat, covered in the note above, and tapioca starch from cassava. Snow mushroom is in here too, with panthenol and allantoin. Keep the jar dry between uses.

Clarity Essence step two

A water-based essence, truly fragrance-free, preserved with gluconolactone and sodium benzoate. Contains licorice root, which sits in the pea and bean (Fabaceae) family, along with aloe and snow mushroom.

Ceramide Barrier Cream step three

Contains yeast amino acids, Lactobacillus ferment, and snow mushroom, plus shea, which is tree-derived. Cholesterol is usually plant-derived and can be lanolin-derived, so it is worth asking us if you have a wool or lanolin allergy. Preserved with a system that includes benzyl alcohol.
