Gentle Descent

When the day won’t quite let go at bedtime.

You are in bed, and the day is still running. Shoulders that have not dropped. That wired-but-tired feeling where rest sits just out of reach.

What an evening like that asks for is a soft signal that the day is over. Gentle Descent is that signal: a calming magnesium body butter for bedtime, and a quiet end-of-day ritual. It is the classic of the line, and if you are new to magnesium butters, this is where most people start.

Calm by design

No menthol. No CBD. Nothing activating beyond a whisper of lavender and chamomile, and never synthetic fragrance.

  • The magnesiumMagnesium chloride is the mineral at the heart of this butter, at about 200 mg of magnesium per teaspoon. We state the number plainly so you can see exactly what is in the jar. It is what gives the formula its smooth, grounding feel, and it is very low-allergen.
  • The ritualMagnesium chloride blended into raw shea, coconut and mango butters. The texture is rich and melting. Massage a little into the back of the neck, the shoulders, or the bottoms of the feet before bed.
  • Reach for it when youWant a magnesium body butter and are not sure where to start. Want a soft, grounding end-of-day ritual. Prefer a low botanical scent over fragrance or actives. Like to massage tired legs, feet and shoulders before bed.
  • ScentLavender and chamomile essential oils at about 1%, soft and herbal, sitting low and close to the skin. It thins out within ten minutes or so and will not scent the room or your pillow. This butter contains essential oils and benzyl alcohol, a declarable allergen, so it is never described as fragrance-free.
  • Where it sits in your routineThis is the one you use in one place, for the neck, the shoulders, or the bottoms of the feet at night. If you want something for all over, the Aurea Calendula Body Crème goes on first after a shower, and this goes on top of the places that need it. Most people use this on its own.

What you notice

  • In the jarFirm and pale. Scoops cleanly and holds its shape.
  • On contactSoftens at body heat in a few seconds. No working needed.
  • Massaging it inSlippy at first, then it disappears. A thumbnail-sized scoop does the neck and both shoulders.
  • After a minuteAbsorbed. Smooth and grounding, with nothing left on your hands.

How to use it

1

Warm a small amount

Take a little on clean fingertips and let it soften. A small scoop goes a long way.

2

Place your hands first

Rest your warm hands on the back of your neck or your shoulders for a breath before you start. Let your system register the warmth and know what is coming. It is the part that lets your shoulders drop.

3

Massage where you wind down

Smooth into the back of the neck, the shoulders, or the bottoms of the feet. Slowly, and with more pressure than you think you need.

4

Before bed

Use it as the last soft step of your evening, as a nightly grounding ritual. Nothing here needs to be rushed.

5

Keep it external

External use only. Wash your hands after, and keep away from eyes and broken skin.

Allergens and sensitivityEvery ingredient named, and who each one matters to

I formulate for skin that reacts to almost everything, including my own. Here is everything in the jar, with notes written for anyone who reacts to fragrance, essential oils, or related botanicals.

Magnesium Chloride≈ 200 mg magnesium per tsp
The mineral that gives the butter its smooth, grounding feel. Very low-allergen and gentle.
AquaThe solvent the magnesium goes in
Water is what makes a preservative necessary, and it is why a jar that arrives separated should not be used.
Shea, Coconut & Mango ButtersRaw & unrefined, organic
The nourishing base. Mango is in the Anacardiaceae family, alongside cashew and pistachio. Shea is tree-derived and clinically low-allergen even for tree-nut-reactive skin. Both are named here for anyone with those specific allergies.
Lavender OilLavandula Angustifolia · 0.75%
Linalool makes up about 45% of this oil, alongside linalyl acetate, beta-caryophyllene, terpineol, geraniol, limonene and five more. These are aromatic components that some fragrance-sensitive skin reacts to. The full list is in the ingredient panel above.
Chamomile Flower OilAnthemis Nobilis · 0.25%
Roman chamomile, in the Asteraceae (daisy and ragweed) family, so it can cross-react for anyone sensitive to ragweed. Our sunflower-derived vitamin E sits in that same family, which gives this butter two Asteraceae points. The oil naturally contains pinene, linalool, geraniol, limonene, terpineol and citronellol.
Cetearyl Olivate & Sorbitan OlivateOlive-derived emulsifier
The olive-based system that holds the butter together so it spreads evenly. Plant-derived and low-reactivity.
Benzyl AlcoholECOCERT-permitted preservative
Keeps the formula stable. It is here as a preservative rather than a scent ingredient, and it is also a declarable fragrance allergen on EU labels. That is the one reason this butter is not labeled ‘fragrance-free.’
Supporting baseCandelilla wax, dehydroacetic acid, vitamin E
Texture, structure, and freshness, all low-reactivity. Our vitamin E is sunflower-derived, which is the second Asteraceae point noted above.

That is everything in the jar, down to what the plants brought with them. Nothing hidden, nothing implied. If a particular ingredient gives you pause, patch test a small area first. You know your body best.

Formulated for reactive, easily-overwhelmed skin. We suggest a patch test on the inner forearm, left 24 hours, before wider use. External use only. Keep away from eyes and broken skin, and avoid freshly shaved skin, where magnesium can tingle.

Care and keepingHow long a jar lasts, why it is preserved, and how to store it

How long a jar lasts

A thumbnail-sized scoop covers the back of the neck and both shoulders, so a jar used nightly lasts a long time. Most people take less after the first fortnight, once they stop scooping like it is a body lotion.

Whether it is preserved, and why

Yes. Magnesium chloride goes into this butter dissolved rather than as a powder, so there is water in the jar, and water is what makes a preservative necessary. The system is dehydroacetic acid and benzyl alcohol, both ECOCERT-permitted, at the smallest amount that keeps the butter stable.

Benzyl alcohol is here as a preservative rather than a scent ingredient, and it is also a declarable fragrance allergen on EU labels. That is one of the reasons this butter is never called fragrance-free. The lavender and chamomile are the other.

Storing it, and keeping water out

Cool, out of direct sun, lid on between uses. Because there is water in the formula, scoop with dry fingers or a small spatula rather than wet hands, and keep the jar off the edge of the bath.

If it arrives warm

Softening in a hot mailbox is normal. Let the closed jar sit somewhere cool and it will firm up again.

  1. Erin Irvine (verified owner) –

I love the smell and texture of this magnesium cream.

  2. Isabel Peñaloza (verified owner) –

I’ve always struggled with Cramps during my period, I usually used heat pads and Herbal tea, but this time I also included the Magnesium Butter during the nights before going to bed and it went amazing. I felt less bloated the next morning.

  3. Jodi –

This magnesium butter is incredible, it smells amazing and it truly feels like it applies like butter. I love putting this on the bottom of my feet before bed. It helps me relax, and also helps my achy feet from working on them all day.

  4. Karen (verified owner) –

I used this on my foot that was hurting and no issue the following morning when I stepped out of bed.

  5. Darci Londo –

I’ve always relied on meditation to help me wind down in the evening, but recently life got more demanding and I found myself carrying a lot of tension, especially in my jaw.

Adding IndieFog’s Magnesium Butter to my nightly routine gave me a ritual I genuinely look forward to. The simple act of warming it between my hands and massaging it in has become a calming, grounding moment — a quiet signal to myself that the day is done. It’s the pause I take right before I meditate.

The scent, the texture, and the whole experience feel soft and comforting, and I love having a peaceful self-care moment built into my evening. It’s become a cherished part of my nightly ritual, and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a simple, sensory way to slow down at the end of the day.
