Cooling Clarity

When you want the cool, and hemp is the part you cannot have.

A bright, cooling butter for the chest, the neck and the feet. Menthol and an eight-oil botanical blend on a base of raw butters.

The cool builds slowly rather than hitting. It is the same butter as Deep Clarity with the hemp extract left out, so it is the one to reach for if you are drug tested, or would rather not have it.

Before you use it · salicylate

This butter contains wintergreen, which is naturally about 99% methyl salicylate. You will find methyl salicylate named in the ingredient list below.

Do not use it without speaking to your doctor first if you are sensitive to salicylates, allergic to aspirin, or taking anticoagulants or blood thinners.

Not for use during pregnancy, and not for children.

Keep it away from mucous membranes, and do not use it with a heating pad or any other source of external heat.

Strong on purpose

Four per cent menthol and eight essential oils. This is a bold, stimulating body butter, and it is the opposite of the gentle facial line.

  • The mentholFour per cent. It is what gives this butter its scent and its cooling character. The cool builds slowly rather than hitting, and it keeps going after you stop.
  • The magnesiumMagnesium chloride, at about 200 mg of magnesium per teaspoon, dissolved in water rather than added as a powder. It may tingle on broken or freshly shaved skin.
  • The botanical blendEight essential oils at one per cent in total: blue chamomile, helichrysum, lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, clove, rosemary and wintergreen. Every one is named in the list, along with fourteen of the aromatic constituents they bring with them.
  • Reach for it when youAre looking for a menthol body butter without hemp extract. Want the slow cool and the bright aromatic. Prefer a cool that builds slowly. Like something bright across the chest before bed.
  • Where it does not belongThis is a body product. It is not for the face, and it is not the one to reach for if you are navigating MCAS or easily-overwhelmed skin. The Descent butters are the gentle ones.

How to use it

1

Patch test first

Menthol is strong and there is a salicylate in the blend. Try a small amount on the inside of the forearm and wait 24 hours before fuller use.

2

Start smaller than you think

A little goes a long way, and the cool keeps building after you stop. Take less on the first few uses and wait before adding more.

3

Massage where you carry it

The chest, the back of the neck, the shoulders, or the bottoms of the feet. Intact skin only.

4

Keep it external

External use only. Wash your hands after, and keep away from eyes, broken skin and mucous membranes.

5

No heat on top

Do not use it with a heating pad or any other source of external heat.

Allergens and sensitivityEvery ingredient named, and who each one matters to

This is one of the two most aromatic butters we make, and it carries a salicylate. Here is everything in the jar, written for anyone who reacts to fragrance, essential oils or related botanicals.

Wintergreen Leaf OilGaultheria Procumbens · the salicylate
About 99% methyl salicylate, which is why methyl salicylate is named in the ingredient list. Read the salicylate cautions above this section before you use it.
Menthol4%
What gives this butter its scent and its cooling character. It is strong. Menthol can irritate or sensitise, so start with less than you think and wait. It is itself a declarable fragrance allergen, and it is named as an ingredient in its own right.
Clove Flower OilEugenia Caryophyllus
About 85% eugenol, a well-known fragrance allergen, with eugenyl acetate alongside it. Both are named in the list.
Blue Chamomile & HelichrysumChamomilla Recutita, Helichrysum Italicum
Both in the Asteraceae (daisy and ragweed) family, so they can cross-react for anyone sensitive to ragweed. Our sunflower-derived vitamin E sits in that same family. Three Asteraceae points in this jar.
Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Rosemary & LavenderThe rest of the blend
Bright, penetrating botanical aromatics, and common sensitisers for fragrance-reactive skin. Between them they bring linalool, pinene, linalyl acetate, limonene, camphor and more, all named in the list.
Magnesium Chloride≈ 200 mg magnesium per tsp
Dissolved in water rather than added as a powder. Very low-allergen. It may tingle on broken or freshly shaved skin.
Shea, Coconut & Mango ButtersRaw & unrefined, organic
The nourishing base. Mango is in the Anacardiaceae family, alongside cashew and pistachio. Shea is tree-derived and clinically low-allergen even for tree-nut-reactive skin.
Benzyl AlcoholECOCERT-permitted preservative
Keeps the formula stable. A preservative rather than a scent ingredient, and also a declarable fragrance allergen on EU labels.
Supporting baseOlive-derived emulsifier, candelilla wax, dehydroacetic acid, vitamin E
Texture, structure and freshness, all low-reactivity. The vitamin E is sunflower-derived, which is the third Asteraceae point noted above.

That is everything in the jar, down to what the plants brought with them. Nothing hidden, nothing implied. If a particular ingredient gives you pause, patch test a small area first. You know your body best.

Care and keepingHow long a jar lasts, why it is preserved, and how to store it

Whether it is preserved, and why

Magnesium chloride goes in dissolved rather than as a powder, so there is water in the jar, and water is what makes a preservative necessary. The system is dehydroacetic acid and benzyl alcohol, both ECOCERT-permitted.

Storing it

Cool, out of direct sun, lid on. Scoop with dry fingers rather than wet hands. Menthol is volatile, so a lid left off will quietly cost you some of the cool.

If it arrives separated

Softening in a hot mailbox is normal and it will firm up again. A wet or watery layer sitting apart from the butter is not. Do not use it. Send us a photograph and we will replace it.

Your purchase includes free access to Rooted & Well™, our holistic community with monthly founder sessions, journaling prompts, meditations, and practitioner-supported resources.

Please note

Contains wintergreen, naturally about 99% methyl salicylate. See the salicylate cautions above before use.

We suggest a patch test on the inner forearm, left 24 hours, before wider use.

External use only, on intact skin. Keep away from eyes, broken skin and mucous membranes, and avoid freshly shaved skin, where magnesium can tingle.
