Shield Serum

When your skin’s barrier feels worn thin.

You know the feeling. Skin that stings at the first new product, and flushes when the weather turns. Skin that drinks in moisture and still feels tight an hour later.

This was made to be the steady, conditioning layer that has been missing. A cucumber and ceramide serum, built around the same lipids skin makes for itself, that lays down a soft, steadying layer under everything else you use.

The hero · the ceramide complex

Most ceramide serums carry one ceramide. This one carries three, NP, AP and EOP, alongside cholesterol and phytosphingosine.

That grouping matters because it is the same family of lipids skin makes for itself, in roughly the proportions it uses them. In a serum they sit closer to the skin than they would in a cream, which is why this is the layer that goes underneath. They are also among the best-tolerated ingredients in skincare.

Left out on purpose

No acids. No retinoids. No fragrance. Nothing activating. A quiet, conditioning layer and nothing asked of your skin.

  • The heroCeramides NP, AP and EOP, with cholesterol and phytosphingosine. The same family of lipids skin makes for itself.
  • The baseCucumber fruit water and rice seed water, fresh and light, with centella, marshmallow root and allantoin for a calm, comfortable feel.
  • The rice fermentTen per cent of the bottle, and a ferment. See the allergens fold if you are sensitive to yeast or ferments.
  • Reach for it when youFeel thin, tight, or easily set off. Sting or flush at new products and weather. Stay dehydrated no matter how much you layer.
  • ScentNone added. Only the soft, fresh note of cucumber and rice water. No synthetic fragrance and no essential oils.
  • Where it sits in your routineStep three. Cleanse, then an essence, then this pressed in while skin is still damp, then the Ceramide Barrier Cream or the Defy Face Butter over the top to seal it. Once or twice a week the Cacao Renewal Polish or the Radiance Mask goes in after cleansing, and the routine works without it.

Truly fragrance-free, with no caveat. The preservation system carries no benzyl alcohol, which is what keeps our water-based butters from using that word.

  • AbsorptionSinks in fast, with no tack and nothing to wait for.

How to use it

1

After cleansing

Use on freshly cleansed skin, while it is still slightly damp, for the best slip and absorption.

2

Place your hands first

Dispense a few pumps into your palms, then rest your hands over your face for a breath before you move. It is a small thing, and it is the part that lets your shoulders drop.

3

Press it in, slowly

Press gently over the face and neck, moving upward. No rubbing and no pulling. Let the essence sink in on its own while you keep breathing.

4

Pause before you layer

Let the watery layer settle for a moment. Then follow with your serum, butter, or cream while skin is still dewy.

5

Morning or evening

Gentle enough for daily use. Nothing here needs to be rushed.

Allergens and sensitivityEvery ingredient named, and who each one matters to

I formulate for skin that reacts to almost everything, including my own. So I build for less, and I name all of it. Here is everything in the bottle, written for anyone with a specific allergy.

Barrier LipidsCeramides NP, AP, EOP, phytosphingosine, cholesterol · the hero
The skin-identical lipids at the heart of the serum, the same family the barrier is made of. Among the best-tolerated ingredients in skincare.
Yeast & Lactobacillus Ferments, Snow MushroomSaccharomyces ferment, Lactobacillus ferment, Tremella
Conditioning ferment and mushroom botanicals. Yeast-, ferment- and fungal-derived, so this is the note for anyone with a mould, yeast, or ferment sensitivity.
Cucumber & RiceCucumis Sativus, Oryza Sativa
Cucumber is in the melon (Cucurbitaceae) family, named here for that specific allergy. Rice water is a naturally gluten-free grain.
Centella AsiaticaApiaceae family
Gotu kola is in the carrot and celery family, named here for anyone watching that family.
Texture & preservationPropanediol, carbomer, xanthan gum, sodium lauroyl lactylate, ethylhexylglycerin, gluconolactone, sodium benzoate, sodium phytate
The texture, stabilisers and naturally derived ECOCERT preservation system. Ethylhexylglycerin arrives inside the ceramide complex and is a preservative booster, so the preserving system here is slightly broader than gluconolactone and sodium benzoate on their own.

That is everything in the bottle. Nothing hidden, nothing implied. If a particular ingredient gives you pause, the yeast and mushroom ferments especially if you are sensitive to mould or yeast, patch test a small area first. You know your body best.

Care and keepingHow long a bottle lasts, why it is preserved, and keeping it clean

How long a bottle lasts

A few drops covers a face, so a bottle goes further than the size suggests. Most people use less after the first fortnight, once they stop pouring it like a toner.

We have not printed a month figure, because ours would not be yours.

Whether it is preserved, and why

Yes, and it has to be. This is a water-based formula, and water is what makes a preservative necessary. Without one it would not be safe to keep on a bathroom shelf for months.

The system is gluconolactone and sodium benzoate, both ECOCERT-certified. It carries no benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol is a declarable fragrance allergen, and its absence here is the reason this one is called fragrance-free with no caveat attached.

Storing it, and keeping it clean

Cool, out of direct sun, closed between uses. Because it is water-based, dispense onto clean hands rather than dipping wet fingers into the bottle, and keep it off the wet edge of the sink. A preserved product is protected, and it still does better when you are not adding tap water to it twice a day.

If it arrives warm, and when to stop

Warmth in transit is normal, and a hot mailbox is nothing to worry about here. A water-light formula has nothing to melt. Leave it somewhere cool for an hour and it will be exactly as it should be.

What to watch for instead is a change in the formula itself. Separation or cloudiness that was not there when you opened it, or a smell that has shifted. Any of those and you should stop using it and tell us, and we will replace it.

Community accessIncluded free with your purchase

Your purchase includes free access to Rooted & Well™, our holistic community with monthly founder sessions, journaling prompts, meditations, and practitioner-supported resources.

Please note

Formulated for reactive, easily-overwhelmed skin. We suggest a patch test on the inner forearm, left 24 hours, before facial use.

For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, and rinse with water if it gets in.
