Hair that goes rough the moment it dries.
Coarse hair, curls, colour that has been through a few rounds. It loses moisture faster than it holds it, and the tangles arrive first at the ends where the hair is oldest.
The Hydrate Conditioner Bar was made for that part of the length.
ii. The Ritual
Slip enough to get a comb through.
A dense, buttery bar that softens on contact with warm wet hair and lays down real slip. Behentrimonium methosulfate and cetyl alcohol do the conditioning. Mango and cocoa seed butters, squalane, and a light coconut-derived ester soften the lengths as you work it through.
Panthenol and centella asiatica are in there for softness and for how it leaves a scalp feeling. It also includes kokum butter.
No protein of any kind, on either version, which matters if you have been avoiding it.
This version is a harder bar than the one before it. That was the reason for the reformulation.

Sixteen ingredients. The full list is on the label and on this page, in order, with nothing folded into a fragrance line.
Silicone-free slipThe slip comes from behentrimonium methosulfate and fatty alcohols. No dimethicone, no amodimethicone, nothing ending in -cone.
Protein-freeNo hydrolysed wheat, no silk, no keratin, no protein of any kind. Verified on both versions.
Butters and squalaneMango and cocoa seed butters with sugarcane-derived squalane. Also includes kokum butter.
Small-batch and handmadeA 2.8 oz bar, poured by hand in San Diego, concentrated so it ships without a plastic bottle.
Left out on purpose: synthetic fragrance, silicones, protein, parabens, and mineral oil. Choose it lightly scented with lavender and geranium essential oils, or unscented and essential-oil-free.
Where the slip comes from
Behentrimonium methosulfate, a plant-derived conditioning ingredient, carried in cetyl alcohol. Together they are most of this bar, and they are what lets a comb move through wet hair. The softness that stays afterward is butter, squalane and a light ester. The same starting point as the rest of the Nervous System Skincare™ line, which is to give the skin you are washing less to react to.

Scent: the scented bar carries lavender and geranium essential oils, soft and herbal, and most of it leaves with the rinse. The unscented bar has no added fragrance and no essential oils. Neither version contains synthetic fragrance. Both are preserved with a system that includes benzyl alcohol, so neither is described as fragrance-free. Choose your option at checkout.
How to Use
Shampoo first, then squeeze
Wash, then squeeze the water out of your hair. A bar lays down better slip on damp hair than on soaking hair.
Glide over the lengths
Run the bar from mid-length to ends, a few passes, more where it tangles. Go lightly near the roots if your hair is fine.
Comb it through
Comb or work it through with your fingers to spread the slip and take the tangles out while the hair is still wet.
Leave it a minute, then rinse
Give it a minute, then rinse with cool water. Rinse less for more softness, more for less weight.
Dry the bar, every time
Stand it on a draining dish out of the shower stream and let it dry fully between uses. This bar is rich, so its wet face softens in use. Drying it is part of how it keeps, so it is worth doing every time.
Straight Answers About Conditioner Bars
Conditioner bars come with their own worries, and they are different from the ones about shampoo bars. Here are the answers in plain terms.
Will it weigh my hair down?
It can, if you use it like shampoo. This is a rich bar and it is built to leave softness behind. Use it from mid-length to ends, keep it off the roots, and rinse a little longer if your hair is fine. Most people who find a bar heavy were using it everywhere.
Will it build up?
There are no silicones in it, so there is nothing here that layers the way a silicone does. What stays on your hair is butter, squalane and fatty alcohol, and a wash takes it off.
Does it have protein?
No. No hydrolysed wheat, no silk, no keratin, nothing. Neither the scented nor the unscented version has any protein in it. If protein leaves your curls stiff or straw-like, this bar has none of it to give you.
Do I put it on my scalp?
No need. Conditioning belongs where the hair is oldest, which is the last few inches. Your scalp is already making what it needs.
Is it a leave-in?
No. Rinse it out. It is built at a strength that expects rinsing, so leaving it in makes hair feel coated rather than conditioned.
The bar is red. Will it colour my hair?
The bar is tinted with iron oxides, the same family of pigment used in mineral makeup, at a very small fraction of the formula. We are finishing our testing on light, grey and bleached hair and we will publish exactly what we find here. Until that is done we are not going to tell you it is fine. If your hair is white, grey or lightened and you would rather not wait, write to us and we will tell you where the testing stands.
Will the bar go soft?
This bar was reformulated to be harder, which was the reason for the change. A conditioner bar has to be rich enough to lay down slip and firm enough to survive a wet shower, and the new formula is built for both.
The face you use will still soften while you are using it. That is the bar working. Stand it on a draining dish out of the shower stream and the rest of it stays firm.
How many uses will I get?
That depends on your hair length, how much you use each time, and whether the bar dries between washes. We have not printed a count, because ours would not be yours.

About the colour
This bar includes iron oxides. They are there so the conditioner and the shampoo bar are not the same object in a wet shower, and they sit at the very bottom of the ingredient list.
If you avoid dyes, this is worth knowing. Iron oxides are pigments rather than dyes. A dye dissolves into what it colours. A pigment stays as tiny solid particles and never dissolves, which is why iron oxides are the pigment used in mineral makeup. They are also the family that colours clay and soil. There are no FD&C or D&C colorants in this bar.
We are not going to call a colorant natural. It is a pigment, it is synthetic and cosmetic grade so we know exactly what is in it, it is declared, and it is the last thing on the list.
Sensitivity Transparency
Cocoa, kokum and mango seed butters are all tree-derived. Coco-caprylate is a coconut-derived ester. The bar also carries castor and hydrogenated castor oil, jojoba, meadowfoam, abyssinian seed oil, and marshmallow root, which is in the Malvaceae family alongside hibiscus and okra. Centella asiatica is Apiaceae, alongside carrot and celery. Tocopherol is sunflower-derived, which is a light sunflower and ragweed (Asteraceae) consideration. The squalane is sugarcane-derived, so there is no olive in the bar.
No protein, on either version. No hydrolysed wheat, silk, keratin, oat or soy protein of any kind.
The scented bar carries linalool, citronellol and geraniol, which occur naturally in lavender and geranium oil and are declared for that reason. The unscented bar has none of them.
This is a reformulated bar. The previous version contained shea butter, coconut oil and ylang ylang oil. None of those are in it now. If you bought the old bar, or avoided it, please read the list above.
Please Note
Formulated for reactive, easily-overwhelmed skin. We suggest a patch test on the inner forearm, left 24 hours, before facial use. For external use only. Keep out of the eyes, and rinse with water if contact occurs. Stand the bar on a draining dish and let it dry between uses. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.
