It goes rough between washes. It tangles at the ends. You have found the water it needs and it does not seem to hold on to any of it.
The Hydrate Shampoo Bar was made to wash and soften in the same step.

A wash that leaves hair soft on the way out.
A creamy, low-foam bar that lifts away oil and buildup while it conditions. Squalane, cocoa butter, and kokum butter cushion the lengths as you wash. Betaine and panthenol hold moisture at the strand, so hair feels hydrated once it dries rather than only while it is wet.
There is a small amount of behentrimonium methosulfate in the bar, which is the conditioning ingredient. It is why the comb moves through afterward.
This version is a harder bar than the one before it. That was the reason for the reformulation.
Centella asiatica is in there for the scalp, left in for how it feels rather than for anything it claims.

Sulfate-free cleansingSodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, and caprylyl/capryl glucoside do the washing. No SLS, no SLES.

Left out on purpose: synthetic fragrance, sulfates, soap, silicones, parabens, and dyes. Choose it lightly scented with lavender and geranium essential oils, or fragrance-free and essential-oil-free.
Why it washes the way it does
This is a soap-free bar. It cleanses with sodium cocoyl isethionate, a coconut-derived surfactant, at a pH of 4.8 to 5.2. It lifts oil and buildup and leaves the scalp’s own oils where they are. The same starting point as the rest of the Nervous System Skincare™ line, which is to give the skin you are washing less to react to.

Scent: the scented bar carries lavender and geranium essential oils. Soft, herbal, a little green, and it lifts in the steam and leaves with the rinse. It does not stay in your hair through the day. How to Use
Wet hair and bar
Wet your hair thoroughly and run the bar a few times over your scalp and lengths, or work it between wet hands.
Massage into a lather
Massage the creamy, low-foam lather into your scalp with your fingertips, not your nails. The foam stays low. That is the bar working, not the bar failing.
Rinse well
Rinse thoroughly with warm water until the water runs clear.
Follow with conditioner
Follow with the Hydrate Conditioner Bar through the lengths.
Let it dry
Stand the bar on a draining dish out of the shower stream, and let it dry fully between washes. This is part of how the bar keeps, so it is worth doing every time.

Why there is water in a bar
Aqua sits third on the list, which surprises people who expect a bar to be dry. Some of it is what the surfactants arrive in, and some of it is added during the pour so the bar sets the way it should. Water is also why the bar is preserved, with gluconolactone and sodium benzoate. A bar that sits wet in a shower needs a preservative, and we would rather name ours than leave it out and hope.
Sensitivity Transparency
Coconut-derived material is throughout the cleansing system, in the sodium cocoyl isethionate, the hydrogenated coconut oil that arrives with it, and the caprylyl/capryl glucoside. Cocoa seed butter and kokum seed butter are both tree-derived. Centella asiatica is in the Apiaceae family, alongside carrot and celery. Tocopherol is sunflower-derived, which is a light sunflower and ragweed (Asteraceae) consideration. The squalane is sugarcane-derived, so there is no olive in the bar.
The scented bar carries linalool, citronellol, and geraniol, which occur naturally in lavender and geranium oil and are declared for that reason. The unscented bar has none of them.
This is a reformulated bar. The previous version contained colloidal oatmeal, coconut milk, marshmallow root, and ylang ylang oil. None of those are in it now. If you bought the old bar for the oat, or avoided it because of the oat, please read the list above.

Formulated for reactive, easily-overwhelmed skin. We suggest a patch test on the inner forearm, left 24 hours, before facial use. For external use only. Keep out of the eyes, and rinse with water if contact occurs. Let the bar dry between uses. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.

Straight Answers About Bars
Most people arrive at a shampoo bar with a bad story about one. Waxy hair, weeks of adjustment, a vinegar rinse they were told was mandatory. Those are fair worries and they have a specific cause, so here are the answers in plain terms.
Will it leave buildup?
No. The film people describe comes from soap, which is alkaline and reacts with the calcium and magnesium in tap water. There is no soap in this bar. It cleanses with sodium cocoyl isethionate at a pH of 4.8 to 5.2, so there is nothing in it that can form that film.
Does my hair have to go through a transition period?
No. Those adjustment weeks belong to soap, while your scalp and your water work through the film above. There is no film here, so there is nothing to wait out. The first wash is what the bar does.
Do I need an apple cider vinegar rinse?
No. An ACV rinse exists to bring alkaline soap back down the pH scale. This bar already sits at 4.8 to 5.2, so a rinse has nothing to correct. Use one if you like how it feels on your hair. You do not need it to make this bar work.
Will it strip my hair?
Washing removes oil, and that is what washing is for. The question is how much and how roughly. There are no sulfates and no soap in this bar, and squalane, cocoa butter and kokum butter go through the wash with it, so hair feels cushioned rather than tight.
Why is there so little lather?
Foam and cleansing are two different things. These surfactants were chosen for how gently they wash, not for how much they foam, so the lather stays creamy and low. Your hair is getting clean at that lather.
Will it work in hard water?
Yes. Hard water is a problem for soap, for the reason above. The cleansers in this bar do not react with hard water minerals, so the bar washes and rinses the same way whatever comes out of your tap.
Is it gentle enough for colour-treated hair?
The two things that matter for colour are sulfates and pH. This bar has no sulfates and sits at 4.8 to 5.2, which is the acidic side. We have not run colour-fastness testing, so we are not going to tell you it protects your colour. We will tell you exactly what is in it, and you can decide.
Will the bar go soft?
This bar was reformulated to be harder. That was the point of the change, because a bar that softens in the shower is the thing people give up on. The fat phase was rebuilt around stearyl alcohol, which melts higher than the alcohol it replaced, so the bar holds its shape at shower temperature.
It still needs to dry. Stand it on a draining dish out of the shower stream, and it will stay firm. A bar left sitting in water softens whatever it is made of.
How many washes will I get?
That depends on your hair length, how often you wash, and whether the bar dries out between times. We have not printed a wash count, because ours would not be yours.
